Operations Management: New Life to an Old Company: 2:30pm - 3:30pm
Presenter(s): Joe Klimask and Marv Hintzman, ASC

Over the past few years the automotive industry and our economy faced a near meltdown.  Automotive manufacturing companies have undergone considerable business challenges, restructuring, ownership transitions, and now are experiencing substantial growth.  ASC, like many other OEM automotive suppliers, experienced that same dynamic; going from a $500M - 26 plant operation – ownership transitions – considerable downsizing, and now substantial growth opportunities as the economy and auto industry experience a resurgence.

Plagued with a highly customized, legacy system, in a culture deep rooted with processes dating back 50 years; to survive, change was mandatory.  You can’t use old tools to build new products in a new business environment.  We made the decision to use Plex as the new corporate ERP system. Our challenge was to make a transition from our legacy system to Plex in a way that matches up with our current product base and growth strategy without disturbing our administrative and plant operations. Our solution was to implement Plex on a customer program by program basis as oppose to the traditional cutover to a new system all at one time.  We found this approach fit best with ASC’s new cultural change as a smaller company; stabilized and ready to accommodate new demands, new product, and new customers.

ASC is working through its first two product programs of the Plex implementation.  With the focus on the Lexington plant operations as the pilot for all production parts, the program by program approach has positioned us for faster new product implementations and accelerated learning curves during the process.

MMOG/LE is a global materials management guideline that is utilized to varying degrees by Ford, GM, and Chrysler and has been an increasingly important topic recently as OEM’s start to ask for greater and greater adherence from their suppliers.  Often times, MMOG/LE conversation seems to be focused around EDI, but in reality it is a much broader context.  Are you taking a proactive or reactive approach to MMOG/LE?  What is your organization doing to not only insure compliance but to develop a world-class supply-chain organization.

In this session, we’ll discuss ways in which Plex can assist in achieving compliance to some of the 100+ criterion in the MMOG/LE guideline.  Furthermore, we’ll discuss ways that Plex can help you self-audit and track compliance to the standard.  Build your roadmap to supply-chain greatness and let Plex tools help you along the way!

QUAKER’S IMPLEMENTATION JOURNEY

Quaker Mfg Corp produces stamped parts, dies, and assemblies for the automotive, heavy truck, and recreational vehicle industries.

Quaker used a competitors ERP system and Access/Excel to perform analysis and run daily operations including scheduling, labor reporting, Quality Systems, financial reporting.  The Tooling Business Unit did not utilize this system.

Plex offered a solution that would meet the needs of the metal stamping and assembly operations (Standard Cost Model) and support the Tooling business (Actual Cost Model) utilizing accounting jobs to track actual costs.

The decision to partner with Plante Moran resulted in an effective and efficient process that guided us through the obstacles of a full ERP implementation.

Hear about benefits that Quaker realized from this implementation and share their lessons learned in a presentation that will guide you through a Plex Implementation Journey.

Platform & Technology: What Users Really Want and How to Manage Large Sets of Data: 3:30pm - 4:30pm
Presenter(s): Ali Baydoun, Inteva

Inteva Products has 72 PCNs and the data keep growing as more sites are implemented. How do we manage the cross PCN reporting "Big Picture" from both a User request for data and technical point of view? Users’ requests for data are becoming more frequent and the massive dataset is requiring more resources to handle (server/storage/computing power). Most users request data without knowing what they really need or think they need. Users have no idea about the other options available to them due to Excel dependency and resistance to change. As the data returned is in the thousands or rows (sometime million), the user is spending most of the time aggregating the data instead of analyzing it. Presentation will focus on the techniques Inteva Products uses to manage cross PCN reporting and day to day requests for data. Additionally the presentation will touch on the type of user requests and other reporting tools.

For most companies, materials make up more than 50% of the cost of a product. In some industries, the cost of materials may reach 75-80%. Yet, more time is spent trying to reduce the labor component of the cost and very little focus is given to the proper use of suppliers to help lower the costs of materials. This presentation will focus on what needs to be in place in order for the suppliers to become partners in your business; working every day to lower the supply chain cost, rather than someone who just supplies parts at a particular price. The presentation will provide specific steps for attendees to use in their businesses for developing supplier partnerships. These steps can be used when attendees return to their manufacturing companies.  The presenter will use specific examples from experience to help the attendees implement some new ideas that reduce cost.

We have demonstrated that despite the complexity of a high volume and high mix industry, we are able to utilize a comprehensive ERP system like Plex in a way that simplifies all related.  We utilize our system to drive the metrics to achieve world class performance in a competitive industry serving many automotive Tier-1s and OEMs, as well as industrial and medical customers.

Do you have a need to manage the procurement of raw materials and supplies in an automated and controlled fashion? Are you able to track changes and approvals? Would you like to incorporate your suppliers into your procurement process? For many companies, requisitions, RFQs and the purchasing process are disconnected and sometimes different software systems. Creating a closed loop process where the requisitions, RFQ to suppliers and purchasing are all connected together in one system provides many benefits. These benefits include:  seamless workflow and approvals, transactional traceability, increased visibility, and improvement to the overall supply chain effectiveness.  Plex providers all these benefits with one, interconnected system incorporating the requisition, RFQ and purchasing modules and embedded workflow, document control, and supplier portal. The Plex closed- loop process provides an automated, efficient solution that expedites the procurement of needed materials in a controlled environment.

Platform & Technology: EMS Industry Complexities: The Need for a Comprehensive ERP System: 9:00am - 10:00am
Presenter(s): Wally Johnson, Firstronic LLC

Although the EMS Industry is considered “high tech” based upon the fact that it involves the assembly on electronic product used in many different industries, EMS operations in have traditionally been managed as “batch” or “job shop” processes, using antiquated tools.  Firstronic was one such EMS provider, prior to the implementation of Plex.  Since our “go live”, we have achieved many of the targeted benefits : increased inventory turns, improved traceability, supplier / customer access to manufacturing data through portals, EDI implementation, etc.

Presenter(s): Dave Utley, Plex

Going green with Plex helped to eliminate a number of issues for us that we didn't initially anticipate. We cut back on the paperwork that was being filed/hoarded. It increased information flow and gave more real-time information to our production/shop floor. No more taping sheets of paper to boxes being put on hold was a major improvement! Our scheduler was almost immediately able to see when stock status changed.
